Beauty—Inside My Fall Make-up Bag

Hola peeps!  Happy Friday!  The season has officially changed and we won’t be seeing any warm temps until late May or early June here in NYC.  During this time we not only need to swap out our clothes but it’s a must that we change our make-up routine as well.  I will be the first to admit that I am no beauty guru, however I do know what works for me.  Here are some examples of my make-up bag essentials:

What's In Your Beauty Bag?

1. Lip balm– Don’t get caught with chapped lips on a chilly day.

2. Eyeshadow– A neutral palette is great for fall, it will allow you to play up your lips.

3. Eyeliner– Show off those almond eyes with a great liner.  I like for mine to appear bigger than they already are.

4. Coconut oil– This oil isn’t just for keeping fly-aways smooth but it can also be used to moisturize the skin. It is an all natural remedy!

5. Tweezers– You know the saying brows frame the face…make sure they are on point (please arch them according to your face shape).

6. Compact– A mirror is a must  for check-ups throughout the day.

7. Lipstick– Deep vampy pouts are all the rage this season and this one is perfect.  Pucker up!

8. Bronzer– If you want to keep your summer glow this will do the trick.  I am addicted to mine!

9. Perfume– Stay fresh all day with a spritz or two.

10.  Mascara– Let those lashes shine and lay it on thick!

There you have it, all the goodies that will get me through the season.  Did I leave out anything?  Please do tell….share!

Product Review—Curlific! by Aphogee

Hola! I have a great product review for you today.  When Curlific! by Aphogee was first released about a month ago I searched high and low for it, however I had no luck so I gave up.  That was until one random day last week when I wandered into my local beauty supply store and there it was on the shelf.  I squealed silently to myself (being the pj that I am) and eagerly read the ingredients then made my way to the register to pay.  A few days ago I gave it a try but first let me tell you a bit about the products I bought—Moisture Rich Leave-In and Curl Definer.

Here is a snippet of the Q & A from their site:

Q:  Everyone seems to have “Curl” or “Natural”  lines now….what’s different about Curlific!

A: You’re right!  As curly hair has stolen the spotlight in many style circles….many companies formerly known for removing curls as well as others, have launched products to tie into the trend. Some of these products are quite good, others represent re-packaging of existing formulas.  At ApHogee, we started formulating and testing in 2010, developing each Curlific! formula from scratch. Naturally curly hair is more delicate than straight hair, because of the ovoid cross-sectional shape of the hair shaft. Generally, the curlier the natural hair, the more flattened the hair shaft and the more prone to cuticle damage.  We pride ourselves on the use of protein in hair care and it’s a natural for ApHogee to specialize in care and maintenance of curly hair. We’re very excited about the results with organic Quinoa protein in our Texture Treatment, Textured Hair Wash and Moisture Rich Leave-in. Our Curl Definer is the first of our styling aids for curly hair and it gives solid control without making the hair “crunchy”. It also washes out cleanly without an aggressive cleanser.

My review:  I washed and conditioned my hair as normal.  Recently I have been practicing the LOC (leave-in condish, oil, cream) Method in order to maintain moisture and I must say it works great!  I used the Curlific Moisture Rich Leave-in mixed with Giovanni Direct Moisture Leave-In Conditioner.  I did that because although the Curlific one is creamy and coated my hair I felt that I needed a little more weight.  Since the temps are chilly now I try to use heavier leave-in conditioners to keep the moisture in.  I then oiled my hair paying close attention to my ends; I also use Castor Oil for my scalp and edges.  It is great for thinning hair and itchy scalps.  Give it a try!

My final step was the Curlific Curl Definer.  It was incredibly cream and it had a pleasant scent.  I put my hair in four sections then proceeded to rake and smooth it through my strands.  Instantly I noticed my curls started to pop and plump up—love it!  Lately I have been into big hair so this was perfect.  Once I air-dried my coif was soft and fluffy!

Here are the final results…the smile on my face indicates how satisfied I am.  Even after three days my curls still looked great and all I had to do was refresh with water.  On a scale of 1-10 I give these products a 8.5.  I would suggest to definitely give it a try, you have got nothing to lose!  So what do you think?  Do tell.

Beautiful Textures Hair Care Presented “HAIR ICON” In Partnership With BET and Cadillac

Hola!  Last week Beautiful Textures Hair Care hosted celebs, models and entertainers to a fab dinner at the Mondrian Soho Hotel for the “Hair Icon” event.  Sponsored by BET and Cadillac it was surely a grand event.  It looks like all that attended had a great time!

“Strength of Nature’s Global Marketing Director, Charlene Dance hosted this incredible evening along with Michaela Angela Davis (Image Activist, BET Editorial Brand Manager). Both women expressed appreciation for those who continue to support the Beautiful Textures brand and all it has to offer for multi-cultural, multi-textured women who refuse to be defined by society’s standards of beauty. An emotionally engaging affair, attendees toasted to celebrating being no-longer monolithic and taking ownership in an event that was created just for them. Encompassing contemporary fusion faire and signature cocktail drinks, the night can only be described as the quintessential celebration of diversity during New York Fashion Week. Highlights of the night included Hair Icon partner, Cadillac, providing luxury vehicles that dropped attendees off at the steps of the Mondrian SoHo in style and attendees all walked away with signature Beautiful Textures Hair Care Swag Bags filled to the brim with the complete line.”

Makeup Product Review—Red Apple Lipstick

Hola!  I hope all is good with you!  Today I have a review of the vegan and gluten-free lipstick line–Red Apple Lipstick.  They sent me two lipsticks and lipgloss to review.  However, before I jump in I wanted to give you a bit of info on the brand if you aren’t familiar with it:

*It is vegan and free of gluten, soy, parabens, allergens and cruelty, as well as other toxins.

*Mineral based which means it can be worn sheer or full-bodied.

*Enriched with Vitamin E for moisture.

*Made in the USA.

sassncurlz.com- Red Apple Lipstick
Left to Right: Red! 101, Hot Mess, and Sunkissed

As you can see from the pic above the lipsticks are rich in color and the gloss is very shiny (within the package).  However if you look below I applied them to my hand and you can see that they all go on very sheer.  Remember that they are mineral based so if increase the application the color will deepen and/or appear more creamy.  I like that I can control the vibrancy of my lipstick or lipgloss.  You can also mix and match to create your own color…fun!

Take of peek of me wearing Red! 101 lipstick, I added a hint of clear gloss for shine.  I am not only ecstatic that it is free of toxins but I am so happy that it looks great on.  Once applied my lips did not free sticky, it didn’t smell weird and it lasted for a lengthy period of time before I had to reapply.  On a scale of 1-10 I give this brand an 8.5 (I want them to add more deep cream colors.)  So do you like this color on me?  Do tell…

I love this color! It goes on smooth and makes my lips pop!

Product Review—Beautiful Textures Curl Definer Styling Custard

Hola!  I was lucky enough to be gifted Beautiful Textures Curl Definer Styling Custard along with their Edges to Ends Silkener and Curl Definer Mousse.  However today’s review will focus on the Styling Custard.  Not to jump ahead but I must say that I LOVE this product!  At first I was hesitant as I had read reviews where it didn’t work for some but it did for me.  My curls were soft, fluffy and poppin!  Enough of my babbling let’s get into the details:

Beautiful Textures Curl Definer Styling Custard 15 FL OZ

Beautiful Textures Curl Definer Styling Custard Ingredients:

Aqua, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract/Aloe Vera, Tocopherol/Vitamin E, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract/Rosemary Extract, Cocos Nucifera Oil/Coconut Oil, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil/Olive Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii Fruit/Shea Butter, Mangifera Indica Seed Butter/Mango Butter, Argania Spinosa Nut Oil/Argan Oil,Hydrolyzed Triticum Vulgare Protein/Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Xanthan Gum, Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium 11, Imidazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Polysorbate 20, Parfum/Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, d-Limonene, Linalool.

What it does:

  • For mixed textures
  • Intense moisture
  • Quickly detangle and control frizz
  • Gives versatile styling options
  • Define curly styles
  • Elongate curls and coils

My Experience:

As suggested I used this product on freshly washed and conditioned hair.  The consistency was a bit sticky, similar to a gel but a little more fluid (if that makes sense).  I proceeded to section my damp hair and applied the custard by smoothing it in.  Usually I rake product through with my fingers but this time I wanted to try something different to see if it would calm my frizz.  No need to be heavy-handed because a little goes a long way.  Once all in I just left my hair alone and let it air dry.  Finally I fluffed a bit and viola here are the results:

image

I may not be smiling but on the inside I am jumping with joy!  Again I LOVE this product!  My curls were shiny, elongated and soft.  It just worked for me as I was able to get 2nd and 3rd day hair just by refreshing with water.  I did have a little flaking on the 3rd day but that is because I had been manipulating my hair (playing in it) so it was to be expected.  Overall I give this an 8 on a scale of 1-10!

All of Beautiful Textures products are priced under $7.00 and can be found at Wal-Mart, Sallys and local beauty supply stores.  So run don’t walk…go buy it now!

*Disclaimer:  Product was gifted to me by Beautiful Textures, yet I was not paid to review as it was based on my own opinion and experience.

Beauty—Coterie {Virtual Vanity}

Hola peeps!  If you knew me personally then you would know that I like to keep my beauty routine to a minimum.  On any given day I start with clean, flawless skin (in between my breakouts of course haha), BB cream, lipgloss/lipstick and well-groomed brows.  However lately I have been giving into makeup; partially because I’ve been attending so many events that I want to glam it up a bit more!  Well just in time I was invited to attend Coterie’s Virtual Vanity launch earlier in the week.  What is that you may ask?

Coterie is the first beauty social network where you can collect your favorite beauty products in your own vanity.  Similar to all other social networks you can share, follow, acquire followers and engage with other members of the community in regards to all things beauty.  The launch party was great and we were also gifted some great products by brands that are featured on the site.  Take a peek at my goodies!
