Hair Talk—8 Products for Summer Haircare

Hola peeps!  Summertime is finally here and I hope that you are enjoying it!  However with my favorite time of the year comes humidity, scorching temps, and random rain showers so we must keep our curls in check.  On that note I have listed 8 products (stylers) that can help you through it all…some I’ve tried and others I plan to try. Let’s get to it!

Summer Haircare
  1. Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly—I have yet to try this but I have read reviews that was on both ends of the spectrum.  This is a gel that aims to define curls without the crunch.  Well I am pretty much sold as I love a good gel!  I guess that this would be perfect for wash and gos and slicking down edges.
  2. Miss Jessie’s Curl Pudding—Tried and true to it’s word this pudding goes on smooth, smells great and is not sticky.  It does provide a good hold and definitely defines curls, my only gripe is that my hair looked dull once it dried.  This is great for a WnG, 2 strand twists and bantu knots.
  3. Jane Carter Solution Curl Defining Cream—This is a fantastic cream for dry kinky strands that needs that extra bit of moisture.  I have tried this on my WNG and twists before and the results were great!  Also this cream is good at slicking down edges when you want to rock a bun.
  4. Taliah Waajid Curly Curl Cream—This is a very rich cream that is great at moisturizing tresses and serves as a protectant against harmful rays (IMO).  Of course I tried this on my WnG but also found out that it provides a good hold for braid outs as well.
  5. Curls Gel-Les’C—As of yet I haven’t tried this product but lots of curlies are raving about it.  However I think that this gel may be best for finer curl textures (i.e. 3A-3B)  and would probably be great for to use on WnG with a soft hold.
  6. Shea Moisture Curling Gel Souffle—This is a beloved brand within the natural hair community and many love this gel as well.  I reviewed this product a few years ago (go here to read) and it wasn’t the greatest for me.  However when paired with their Curl Enhancing Smoothie to do two strand twists expect a luscious, fluffy twist-out the very next day.
  7. Carol’s Daughter Styling Pudding—I’m intrigued by this product because I am unsure if this similar to their infamous Hair Milk wrapped in new packaging or if it is a new formula altogether.  I would guess that the consistency would be creamy yet not too thick since it is a “pudding”, perhaps this would work best to set hair for a flexi-rod set or a bantu knot-out.
  8. Shea Radiance Maximum Curl Defining Cream—This cream is suppose to gently hold, resist humidity and define curls so I would try using this with braid-out.  I would guess that it would give a controlled voluminous look.

So there you have it, 8 products to get you through the summer months.  Gel, pudding, cream and soufflé…there is something for everyone and every style imaginable.  I am sure that I left out quite a few however don’t be shy, leave a comment below and let me know.  I challenge you (and myself) to explore and have fun with our hair during the best season of the year.  Enjoy!

Product Review—Miss Jessies Multicultural Curls

Hola peeps!  I hope all is good, today I have a very much overdue Miss Jessies Multicultural Curls product review for you.  I have tried several of their products before so when I stumbled upon this in Target I knew I had to give it a try!  Please note that this is not a sponsored post as this review is based on my opinion.

This is what I did:

  • Washed and oiled my hair as usual.
  • Used Miss Jessies Leave-in Condish which had pretty decent slip and it smelled good.
  • Then detangled my hair and put it in four sections to prepare to add the styler.
  • Proceeded to coat and shingle the Multicultural Curls throughout my hair.  As I am doing this I noticed that it wasn’t melting in but instead sitting on my hair.  That was the first sign that it was a no no.
  • Once the product was all in I felt that it was too light for my kinky/coily/curly hair so I did what I had to do—applied my trusty EcoStyler Gel on top of it for extra hold.
  • My curlz were somewhat revived but I had to really work it in my hair so I didn’t leave a white coating on top.
  • At last once dry I fluffed  my hair and what you see is what I got.

I am not sure how I feel about this product as you can see that from my slight smile. It is not the worst product I have tried yet it definitely isn’t their best! However I just may give it another go since I still have tons left; perhaps diffusing will help. Overall on a scale of 1-10 I give this a 6 for now. There you have it, my review. Have you tried this or will you? Do tell.

Product Review—Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls

Hola!  Feliz Cinco de Mayo!  Miss Jessie’s released a new product—Jelly Soft Curls a few weeks ago, the inner pj (product junkie) in me couldn’t resist therefore I caved and bought it!  In the past I’ve gotten pretty decent results from their products so I was hoping that this wouldn’t be any different.  They say that this is “for people who want poppin curls without the crunch” and the directions for use are: Evenly distribute a capful or more to damp , freshly washed,  conditioned and detangled hair. To dry: either air dry or use a diffuser attachment on a blow dryer.

WnG using Jelly Soft Curls.

I washed and applied it to my hair as directed.  The consistency was like any other gel, the smell was very similar to their Pillow Soft Curls (almost like fabric softener) and my hair was super shiny.  Once completely dry (air dry) I fluffed to add extra volume and swept my hair to the side for a bit of sass.

2nd day hair using Jelly Soft Curls.

The second day hair was just as good as the first.  All I did was spritz a bit of water to reactive the product, my curlz were poppin and I had even more volume than before.  Boom!  On a scale of 1-10 I give this a 8, as I will definitely be adding this to my rotation.  Will you be giving this a try?  If you have already then please share your experience!

My Hair Update—The Power Puff

Hola peeps!  Since I hit up Miss Jessie’s Curl Bar last week my curlz are popping all over the place…haha!  Seriously I will never again underestimate the power of a good professional cut/trim.  Speaking in which my fave style thus far has been The Power Puff.  I am so happy that I can revisit this style, prior to my cut I couldn’t rock a puff without my hair flopping in my face.  However now I have the right amount of volume and length to achieve this ‘do once again.  Take a peek and let me know your thoughts!

A quick pic of me yesterday as I was headed out to a fashion show. MAC’s Ruby Woo on the lips and H&M New York tee.
A better shot of my curlz and tee **which I luv so much I may go back and get another**!
One word—massive.

On IG (follow me @sassncurlz) I was asked how I achieved this look.  My answer is simple—WNG, styling product of choice (mine was Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue) and an elastic band.  Viola there you have it!  Give it a try and enjoy!
