Hair Talk—My Must-Have Products

Hola peeps!  Since I returned to natural I am often asked what hair products I use to maintain my coif.  My hair closet is filled with puddings, gels,  curl creams, conditioners and more (I’m a low-key pj) but there are a few products I keep stock piled.  Here they are in no particular order:

1) Giovanni Direct Leave-in Weightless Moisture Conditioner-  I love this conditioner!  It is super light and very moisturizing without being sticky or runny on the hair.  It also works well with other products.  I have used some leave-ins that coat the hair so much that when you add a cream or a gel it leaves a white residue—this doesn’t!

2) Shea Moisture Organic African Black Soap Purification Masque- This masque is the bomb.com!  A few months ago when I went through my extreme dry, itchy scalp scare (remember the post if not go here) this was a major player in restoring it back to normal.  I now use this along with the shampoo and conditioner in the line on the regular to keep my scalp and hair in check.  It is very soothing and claims to also aid in curing dandruff, eczema and psoriasis.

3) Organix Hydrating Teatree Mint {Hydrating Treatment}- Hydrate, refresh, or condition…you name it this product is it!  Although for the most part I use it as a hydrator for my curls after I wash but before I add in my leave-in conditioner.  It smells divine and the tea tree mint leaves your scalp feeling tingly and refreshed.  I can never find this in the store so anytime I run across it I tend to buy a couple of bottles…a must-have for sure!

4) Curls Passion Fruit Curl Control Paste- If your edges are like mine—unruly and won’t lay down then you need to pick up this paste asap!  This will snatch them back and laid for days.  There is no other edge control out there for me.

5) Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner- Another leave-in that I cannot do without, however I tend to use this one as a refresher.  It is perfect for reviving flat curls, add moisture to dry hair and great for prepping updos, twists, braids and more.  This will always been in my product arsenal!

6) Ampro Pro Styl Olive Oil Gel- I use all kinds of products on my hair but nothing gives me hold and shine like gel.  Don’t get me wrong I love my Eco Styler gel but this one has truly grown on me.  It doesn’t dry hair or crunchy and enhances my curl pattern.

So there you have it my must-have products!  Have your tried any of these, if so what was your experience?  Do you have a product(s) that you can’t do without?  Do tell!

My Hair Update—Old-School Roller Rules

Hola peeps!  It has been awhile since I have featured my hair so here goes!  As of late I’ve been bored with my usual WNG so I decided to switch it up for the new year.  Read on below for my regimen and how I achieved this soft, curly ‘do.

Here’s what I used and did:

1) Washed and conditioned as normal using random products.

2) Surprisingly I didn’t use a leave-in conditioner but let my hair air dry naturally then slathered on a mixture of olive and cocoa butter oils.

3) Blow dried using low heat to get it semi-straight.  My thoughts were to leave it straight but I didn’t like it so I continued on…

4) On dry hair I used Jane Carter Solution Wrap & Roll to set my hair using old-school foam rollers

5) I used about 16 big rollers in no particular order to section because I wanted my curlz to be care-free.

6) Overnight I slept with a satin bonnet

7) In the am I used a quarter-size of Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine to smooth the frizzies and add shine as I took out the rollers

8) Once all out I shook my head, fluffed and finger-combed to my liking…viola what you see is what ya get!

I love the results—I feel like an old-Hollywood glamazon…haha!  Do you like?  If you have tried these products before what was your outcome?  Better yet did you start 2013 off with a new ‘do?  Do tell all!

Product Review—Jane Carter Nourish & Shine

Hola peeps!  I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.  Today I have a great product review of Jane Carter’s Nourish & Shine.  This product is a 100% natural pure essential oil that is created for curly hair, coarse hair and can also be used as a body butter.  The consistency is great as it almost melts instantly in the palm of your hand, the scent is light and not overbearing at all.  Here are the deets on the ingredients:  Shea butter, Kokum butter, Illippe butter, Mango butter, Vitamins A, D, & E, pear and grapefruit essential oils.

At first I was a little hesitant because I really didn’t know how to use it.  Most of the time I wear my hair in a WNG but now that winter is here I am experimenting more with dry styles and this is the perfect product for it.  This is what I did:

-Washed and conditioned my hair

-Spritzed my hair with a leave-in and then sectioned my hair in 4′s

-Applied a generous amount (about a quarter size) Nourish & Shine to my edges, nape of my neck, and each section

-Then blow dried with very low heat

-Put my hair in 6 twists and curled the ends with sponge rollers

-In the am I untwisted, applied a bit more of Nourish & Shine to control the stray pieces and I was good to go!

I really like this product however, the $22 price for only 4oz can be a bit much; yet I feel that it is worth it and will last a long time.  Have any of you tried this, if so how did you use it….did you like it?  Check out my pics below and let me know what you think.  Enjoy!

During my semi-blowout...my hair has grown soooo much!

This is what my hair looks like after wearing my hair like this for a few days. I love it---light and fluffy! However you see that even with a dry style I still have shrinkage...oh well.

**This is not a paid product review, I purchased and used this on my own.

they say 3rd time’s a charm….Jane Carter Solution Review

Hola peeps!  I hope all is good.  Well you read the post title and all I can say is I beg to differ with that saying.  Much thanks to the Jane Carter Solution team for sending me a travel kit of hair goodies to try.  The kit consisted of shampoo, conditioners (leave-in and reg), curl cream, wrap & roll setting lotion, hair serums, and more!

As you all know from my two previous reviews of their products I didn’t have much luck but I was willing to give it a try yet again.  This time I went for the shampoo and conditioner.  I have been on the lookout for a new poo that gets the job done but in a delicate manner.  The scent is mild and the consistency of the duo is great…not too watery but also not heavy.  I liked that it rinsed out nicely and didn’t leave a sticky film on my hair.  On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give the Moisture Nourishing Shampoo and Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner a 7.  I would definitely try these again.

After my hair was squeaky clean I used a bit of Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner **pulled from my own stash that i had purchased earlier**, in which I raked through my hair with my fingers.  Last, I finished off with the Curl Defining Cream **personal stash again**.  Ok, I just have to say for the last time this product doesn’t work on my hair.  I think that my 3c/4a hair type just rejects it.  It literally sits on my hair and I have to work hard for it to really blend in.  I don’t know about you guys but when I use a cream curl I love for it to melt in my hair if that makes sense.  This JC curl cream doesn’t do that for me.  Perhaps, if you have fine strands similar to 2a/2b hair it will work better.

I finished by twisting my hair at night, then rocked a twist-out updo the next day…..booooo!  I so wanted to love all of these products but as in life there were some hits and misses.  So for me 3rd time’s not a charm.  Look on the bright side, since the kit didn’t play well with my hair there may be something in it for you…stay tuned.  Enjoy the pics!

My 2nd Go Around with Jane Carter’s Curl Defining Cream

Hola!  Ok so as you can see I tried JC Curl Defining Cream again, I had to do a follow-up as I received quite a few emails when I reviewed it the first time.  I am sorry to say but this didn’t do it for me yet again.  I don’t know why,  I didn’t rush this time and I followed the suggested application procedure but still nada!  This is what I did:

-washed with Shea Moisture’s Curl and Shine Shampoo

-conditioned with Aussie Moist

-after rinsing I applied about a dime size of Moroccan Oil just to seal in a bit of moisture

-sprayed JC Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner on my hair

-shingled JC Curl Defining Cream through in sections

-air dry

Now, once all of that was said and done and an hour or so passed I was left with soft hair but nothing out of the ordinary.  One good thing is that it didn’t have that sticky, film feeling that it did last time.  However, it didn’t necessarily elongate my curls  nor added any extra shine (all things that they claimed that this product could do).  We all know that everyone’s hair reacts differently to products, so if you are still interested give it a try.  I will just keep it in my hair closet and perhaps use it when I manage to master a twist-out once my hair gets a bit longer.  I hope that this helps, check out the pics below.  Enjoy!

Saturday’s Review—Jane Carter Solution

Hola! I hope that your day is going great.  This is a quick review of the products that I picked up last week at the Transcedence Natural Hair Show.  As I mentioned in my previous post here, I purchased Jane Carter’s Curl Defining Cream and the Revitalizing Leave-in ConditionerThe Curl Defining Cream states that “it prevents curls from shrinking as it dries” and gives “beautiful curls with loads of shine!”

I washed my hair with  Shea Moisture’s  Curl & Shine Shampoo followed by Aussie Moist Conditioner.  After rinsing my hair clean of all products with the exception of about 20% of conditioner left in; I sprayed the Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner all over.  I then applied the cream to my semi-wet hair.  The mistake I made is that I didn’t shingle the product  in so that I could reach each strand,  instead I basically wiped it on **rushing**.  The consistency of the cream was thick which I like and it went on fairly well.  However, afterwards my hair felt like it at a film on it and that was not cool!  To get rid of that sticky feeling I added more water so that it had more slip.  I ended up wearing my hair in a side puff because I didn’t like the way it looked down.  I am not sure but I think that I would have had better results if I applied it differently and didn’t mix products.

I have to say on a scale of 1 to 10, this product in my book is about a 6.  I plan to try them out separately, maybe that will give me better end results.  Overall these aren’t bad, so they are worth another go around.  We shall see!
