Monday’s Muse—Joie Lee

Hola!  Welcome to Monday!  Let’s start the week off right with today’s fab muse—Joie Lee.  You may remember her as she starred in the famed 1989 film Do the Right Thing, which was directed by her famous brother Spike Lee.  Aside from acting Joie in her own right is well-known screenwriter and film producer as well.  I always thought that she was such a unique beauty—cinnamon brown skin, bright big eyes and the kinky curls…flawless!  I am happy to have her as an SNC muse :-)

My Fave Photos—Bey’s Tumblr

Hola peeps!  Sorry as I have been M.I.A. a lot as of late.  I promise once I get a grasp on things posts will resume on the reg, until then I hope that you continue to swing by and enjoy SNC.

Now on to today’s post—my fave pics from Beyonce’s new Tumblr.  I am sure that you all have seen them somewhere as when she released them almost 2 weeks ago the web went crazy.  I just wanted to share a few that really stood out to me.  I love the pic with her and Solo—nothing like having a sisterly bond.  The second make me do a double take because I need every single ring that she is wearing.  The last photo I adore!  Jay and Bey together are major powerhouses; both are at the top of their game, they have a genuine love and everyone wants a piece of them.  Enjoy!

Summer ’74—BK Style

Hola mi gentes!  I hope all is good with ya!  I believe that it was a week or so ago that I shared this link of vintage photos of Brooklyn in the summer of 1974 on my Facebook page.  However I had to pull a few to post here as well for the non-fb peeps :o )  I don’t know I just love looking at old pics from back in the day and comparing them to how times have changed.  I selected these pics because there was a certain something about each of them—everyone depicted and stirred up a feeling that I couldn’t kick.  Although times were hard then and even more so now each pic shows people smiling and enjoying life.  I think now we all see how small the world really is and that everyone is connected in one way or another; it just goes to show that we all can and should get along despite our differences.

Please join us for a screening of When the Drum is Beating (2011), a film by Whitney Dow. The film follows one of Haiti’s most celebrated bands, Septentrional, weaving together the lives of the band members and Haitian history up to the earthquake of January 2010. A more comprehensive picture of today’s Haiti is painted by deconstructing the context of the Haitian music scene against the backdrop of corrupt regimes and subsequent economic strife. Yet, in the end the film is a brilliant celebration of Haitian perseverance and music.
As part of this special warm up for our fall Haitian film festival that is quickly approaching, we’ll be cooling down with rum punch, cola lakaye (Haitian cola), and paté. So come out, kick back and enjoy the first film screening of the Haiti Cultural Exchange Film Festival. Seating is limited; please RSVP to regine@haiticulturalx.org.
